Spa Etiquette 101

Posted by support on Oct 03, 2012

Spa time is sacred. Whether you’re visiting the spa with friends or penciling in a little "me time," stepping away from life’s chaos to restore yourself is a vital part of keeping balanced. It’s amazing what a difference just an hour or two of relaxation can make in our everyday lives. Time is a precious commodity and it is important for all spa patrons to make the most of their experience by getting familiar with spa etiquette prior to check-in. These simple tips will make a world of difference while you and the other spa guests enjoy a day of relaxation.

Dry. Cool. Steam. While spending time in the sauna, cool mist or steam rooms it is proper etiquette to place a towel down first before you sit. Wearing the sandals provided by the spa is also encouraged. For added relaxation, spa attendants are able to infuse the scent of eucalyptus into the steam rooms.

Remember you’re in a No Cell Zone. Please make sure your cell phone is turned off and placed safely inside your locker. Cell phones can be very distracting even on vibrate and since all phones now have cameras, it can raise privacy concerns among others visiting the spa.

Use inside voices. Speaking at low levels will ensure everyone remains in a relaxed state and help you get there too. Many visit the spa to reflect or meditate and may wish to shy away from conversation. A simple smile can go a long way in judging whether the person next to you is up for being a chatterbox or would like some solitude. A great rule of thumb is, be social in the Social Room, quiet in the Quiet Room and keep the banter to lower tones in the lounge areas.

Whirlpools. Before stepping into the whirlpool make it a practice to briefly rinse off in one of the showers. Remove your eye makeup and take advantage of the cool cucumber slices for your eyes or aromatherapy towels for your face. Burke Williams has complimentary skincare products if you forget yours!

Can I spa in my birthday suit? Everyone should be comfortable and enjoy their spa experience regardless if they choose to cover-up or bare all. Burke Williams is a European style spa and does not require swimwear when using the amenities. Whichever your preference, be considerate of your fellow spa guests. While not everyone is completely comfortable around nudity, discretion is appreciated and will make everyone more at ease.

Leave a kind word. Comment cards are not just for complaints. If you've received exceptional service or enjoyed the chilled fruit, let them know! While Burke Williams has always spoiled me with chocolate covered bananas, at my last visit my wonderful spa attendant Maria made me a special batch of the most delicious strawberry lemonade with chilled fruit. It was the perfect accompaniment to my experience. I later found out that this was the first time they had served this spirit so it was important that I let them know what I thought and hope it is there the next time!

Here’s one more tip before I go… use your time wisely. It is recommended that you arrive at least one-hour prior to your service. Trust me, this is something that you don’t want to slack on! Making the most of your visit by enjoying everything the spa has to offer is the best part of any spa day. By incorporating these common practices into your spa routine you will not only enjoy your time more but it will elevate everyone’s spa experience.

Until next time,
